Niranjan Pradhan

Born at Midnapore in West Bengal in 1940.

‘What I have always striven, is to bring out the ‘essence’ or the ‘spirit’ of reality, rather than the reality itself. To my mind that is more than reality’ says the senior sculptor who took his art education, first in painting (1964) and subsequently in sculpture (1967) from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata. Ex-Reader of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, Niranjan also did Art Appreciation Course from the Calcutta University in 1972. Six solo exhibitions of his sculptures were held so far and he participated many group shows including National and AIFACS Exhibition in New Delhi. He is the recipient of President’s Siver Plaque from All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi and Birla Academy Award (twice). His full size bronze statue of Satyajit Ray, Uttam Kumar, bust of Deshapran Birendra Sasmal installed in Kolkata and a half bust of  Raja Rammohan Roy in Bristol. He  designed and excuted Durga Chak Children’s Park in Haldia in 1980. His sculptures are in many collections including National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Member of the Society of Contemporary Artists since 1990, he lives and works in Kolkata.
